The Vipers are a dark and gothic Faction, powerful in magic.
Their lands are home to a hundred mixed races blended by the will of the
dark lord. Beset by enemies on every front, they stand bloodied but unbowed
beneath the weight of war. There are no shiny heroes here, but a myriad
of peoples acting according to their own will or by the dictates of their
leaders. Theirs is a land where power comes to those who work for it and
not to those born noble. The vast wildernesses of Teutonia have allowed
many to claim their own space within the cities in which they have carved
out a home.
Arguably the most diverse of all the Heartland Nations.
Within the past two generations, Teutonia has been subject to a number
of political upheavals and civil war. In 1084, a powerful group of Teutonians
calling themselves the Cobras, rose against the King and took control
of the country. Ten years later, the King's son fought back and regained
rulership of Teutonia in his father's name. And so, for the past few years,
the Vipers have maintained their position in Teutonia, but the Cobra threat
has never been completely irradicated.
For as long as anyone can remember, Teutonia has been a split country,
with church and state ruling with equal zeal. The church governing the
spiritual, the King governing the secular.
Beneath the King, exist the great Houses of Teutonia, powerful and ancient
feudal families, whose task is to preserve themselves as much as it is
to govern the country they occupy. There was a time when the houses quarrelled
and argued, but since the close of the last great civil war, the barons
have set aside most of their petty bickering for the good of the land.
Carrying the word of the King and a prime example of Viper Teutonia, is
the order of the Knights of Teutonia. A diverse body of people and creatures
dedicated to the protection of the land and its population. The Viper
Faction regained the lands of Teutonia in 1095 when the ruling Cobras
were consumed by popular revolt. King Gustav, who has served as monarch
to the Viper people for longer than any other contemporary leader in the
Heartlands, led the new regime and swept to power.
As they stand, the Vipers remain a hybrid nation, cosmopolitan in outlook,
and ruthless in policy. They are able to draw upon allies from as far
afield as the deepest lands of Aegyptus, and the distant realm of Nippon.
With a history strongly influenced by Imperial conquest, as well as robust
resistance, it is difficult to imagine how they manage to remain untroubled
by internal dispute. Yet, one factor remains to weld all of the nation
together.. Loyalty to the land.
From the vast and impenetrable depths of the Great Forest,
to the high crags and peaks at Monte Cassino, the Realm of Teutonia is
one of wild diversity. Mountains and forests pepper the land, and great
stretches of marshland defy the invasion of even the most determined communities.
As diverse and varied as the landscape itself, those who populate it often
stand in stark contrast to the universal races of other distant lands.
Orcs and Goblins fill the Northern Forests and Wastes, sharing them with
darker things that lurk in the hidden passes and woodland paths of Germania.
To the east, the Great Forest makes itself home to an impossible number
of creatures, many of them a blight upon the human populations of the
savage realm. The mountain range of Italia is mined and populated by clans
of Dwarves.
Intensely magical, the realm of Teutonia also plays host to many of the
more disquieting citizens. The dead walk freely throughout the land, their
reanimated bodies dragged back from eternal rest; whilst hordes of Skaven,
an Elder Race of Teutonia, scurry under the surface of the land in their
perpetual search for warpstone.
To the south, throughout Wallachia and Italia, the humans take an unsteady
hold over the land, their villages springing up about the towns, the towns
about the cities, and the cities about the capital. Dozens of castles
dot the land, a continuing reminder to the feudal power wielded by the
great houses of the realm, the honoured families who serve at the will
of their Lord and King.
